The point of ironing a newspaper is not as ridiculous as it sounds. Many butlers and 5 star hotels still practice this age-old tradition. Not only does it eliminate creases and make the paper crisp and easier to read, but the hot iron dries the ink so the reader does not end up with dark smudged fingertips. The ink should remain on the paper and not on your hands to go along with reminder of the front headline news. This timeless problem is now fixable, you’ll wonder how you ever read the Sunday Times without it.
Set your iron on the lowest setting to warm, iron one page at a time, in-between sheets of brown paper or parchment. The newspaper needs to be ironed from the top downward and then folded loosely in a horizontal fashion before being handed to the reader. So now when graciously serving your Husband breakfast, you can also hand him a wrinkle and ink free business section. – THE WIFE

My daughter, Disas boyfriend, Jake gave me, The Bakersfield Californian Newspaper to keep for him. It was front page about 9-11. The paper is dated 9-12-2001, he said, “Would you keep this for me”. So today 7-30-2012 he comes in and says can I have that newspaper I ask you to keep. Of course good ole Mom found it but even though I had it flat it is still wrinkled. I ask my husband, Guy, “Do you think you can iron newspaper?” I was sure you could but he said no. I am so glad I found you on-line. Thank You Kathy

yes, ironing the paper is a very good thing. My wife gets headaches and congestion from the ink of the local papers as well as the national ones. A question I have is whether one has to iron each page or can one merely iron the folded paper en toto?
You have to iron each individual page
The newspaper – in its individual sheets – must be ironed between sheets of brown paper. It is this that soaks up excess ink. If you iron the newspaper without brown paper all you end up with is an ink covered iron.
I have watched newspapers been prepared this way before being taken to Her Majesty the Queen!

This isn’t to soak up excess ink or simply ‘dry’ the ink. Ironing the newspaper actually ‘fixes’ the ink to the paper.
Think about it logically. The newspaper wasn’t printed 5 minutes ago – so the ink is already dry.
Any excess ink will already be soaked up by the newspaper since newspaper is quite absorbent.
