WIFE Tunes: D’Angelo & The Vanguard

D'Angelo and The Vanguard, Black Messiah

WOW! After taking 14 years off, D’Angelo resurfaces with a new band “The Vanguard” and one of the best albums of 2014. THE WIFE™ was completely blown away by the sheer genius of “Black Messiah.” Released at the last-minute this past week, the soul singer picks up right where he left off with his 2000 release of “Voodoo” and doesn’t skip a beat. This album is damn near perfect, incredible from start to finish. 12 tracks of “superior seductive soul layered with well-orchestrated groove after groove.”  Santa gave THE WIFE™ what she really wanted, more awesome music from D’Angelo to make out to. Perfect to put on after the kids are put to bed and give your husband what he really wanted for Christmas!

THE WIFE Favorites: “Ain’t That Easy,” “Sugar Daddy (co-written by Kendra Foster and A Tribe Called Quest alum Q-Tip),” “Really Love” and “1000 Deaths.” Click continue reading” to listen. D’Angelo and The Vanguard, $9.99 at iTunes.com –Taryn Cox for THE WIFE™

WIFE Tunes: Steve Tyrell

Steve Tyrell, This Time of Year

One of THE WIFE’s favorite Christmas albums to get you in the holiday spirit it Steve Tyrell’s “This Time of Year.” Twenty years year ago, Steve Tyrell charmed us with his version of the 1936 standard of “The Way You Look Tonight” in the remake of “Father of the Bride.” Tyrell’s bluesier versions of “Merry Christmas Baby” and “Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer” make the album perfect for decorating Christmas cookies and sipping spiked egg nog by the fireplace with loved ones.

Steve Tyrell will be performing his annual holiday residency at Cafe Carlyle until December 31st. THE WIFE highly recommends this for anyone in the Manhattan area. Although all shows are currently sold out, if you arrive when Cafe Carlyle first opens you can most likely get a table or sit at the bar. Visit Thecarlyle.com for more information or purchase “This Time of Year,” $9.99 on iTunes.  –Taryn Cox for THE WIFE™

WIFE Tunes: Theophilus London

Theophilus London

Theophilus London… THE WIFE’s favorite hat wearing hip hop musician is back! The Brooklyn-by-way-of-Trinidad native and Karl Lagerfeld muse has returned with his sophomore album Vibes. After taking two years off and enlisting Kanye West as Executive Producer, the creative duo managed to turn out a dozen “sophisticated club” tunes. London also had the help of Leon Ware (“Water Me” and “Need Somebody”) and Blood Orange (“Figure it Out”) for a soulful punch to round out this eclectic album.

The perfect album for 40 minutes of good “vibes” all around….  Blast this to get you pumped up for a day of Christmas shopping. THE WIFE Favorites: “Need Somebody,” “Figure It Out,” “Tribe,””Smoke Dance Hall” and “Heartbreaker.” Click “continue reading” to listen. Theophilus London, Vibes, $9.99 at iTunes.com -Taryn Cox for THE WIFE™

Must Download: Serial

Serial Podcast

THE WIFE™ just discovered the true-crime podcast Serial. Apparently people have been going crazy over this and we’re late to the game and just playing catch up.  Serial is a podcast where the host, Sara Koenig unfolds the true story of Adnan who is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of his ex-girlfriend. Details are brought to Koenig’s attention that Adnan might in fact be innocent. Follow the podcast week by week, over the course of a season to follow Koenig as she searches for answers.

However THE WIFE™ gives fair warning that this is oddly addicting… Perfect to listen to while attending to household chores and addressing holiday cards. Tune in every Thursday morning and subscribe for free at SerialPodcast.org or on iTunes. -Taryn Cox for THE WIFE™
